One of the most important relationships that parents will have is the one between them and their child's teacher.

Each interaction between a parent and the school sends a message.    Represent your child well.

Parents are in charge of their child's learning.  School is a vital resource in helping you reach your goals.  View your child's teacher as a resource and actively  cultivate that relationship.  Your child's teacher should have easy access to you. If you change your cell phone number, notify the school.

Show up for parent/teacher conferences.  Volunteer to help in your child's classroom.  If work prevents that send a note and ask what you can do to help.

If you only show up when there is a problem you will miss the value of being involved.

  The future depends on our
  children.  Let's prepare them
  for it.
Handling School Problems:
1.  Cool off before you go to the school.
2.  Think about what your child has shared with you. Consider whether there is any room for misunderstanding.
3.  Keep an open mind.  Listen without making judgements.
4.  Brainstorm solutions with the teacher.  Listen to suggestions.
5.  If your child is at fault, make sure you use appropriate discipline.
6.  If the school is at fault (calm down!) and discuss future preventive steps.  Follow-up as needed.
